How To Find The Perfect Lipstick For Your Skin Tone

One of my friends is venturing out for the first time in the lipstick department and asked me for advice on what shade she should wear, so I thought I'd put together a "How To" guide for first-timers.

Some of my favorites: MAC Up The Amp. YSL Bright Hibiscus Pink. MAC RiRi Woo. Gerard Gloss Wild Orchid. YSL Nude Beige. MAC Show Orchid. (I am loyal to MAC and YSL ask you can see...)

It's no secret that I love a nice lipstick or gloss (especially a bright pink or a bold red!) but I had to figure out what shades look best on my fair, cool-toned complexion. It's really a science ;)

First, you need to figure out what kind of undertone your skin has. Are you warm or cool?
Warm Skin Tones: Yellow or orange-red undertones.
Cool Skin Tones: Pink or red undertones.

From there, you can decide what shades look best and which shades you should avoid.

What shades look best?
Fair/Light: Berry and wine reds with blue undertones, deep plum-reds, browns and beige with pink undertones, pinks with blue undertones, orange-pinks.
Medium/Light Olive: blue-reds, deep pinks, brownish reds, deep reds, caramel, medium brown with pink or yellow undertones, coffee browns.
Olive: dark berries, deep browns and reds.
Medium/Brown: Berry pinks, rose, brown reds, medium plums with yellow.
Dark: deep shades, reds with blue undertones, reddish browns, deep plums, wine reds, deep rose.

What shades should you avoid?
Fair/Light: orange-reds, pale browns with yellow undertones.
Medium/Light Olive: You can get away with warm and cool shades.
Olive: Pale pinks, mauves, orange-reds, pink-reds.
Medium/Brown: light/cool pinks, pastel shades, orange.
Dark: orange, pinks, pastel.
