Essential Oils and Your Health: 7 Natural Remedies for Better Skin, Better Sleep, and More...

Who doesn't love a spa? Tranquil music, calming tea, the joy of slipping into a fluffy robe, and a foot bath while you wait. You walk into your treatment room and it smells of relaxing lavender or refreshing peppermint.
You're probably familiar with aromatherapy and the notion that certain scents can alter one's mood, but what was news to me is that these scents, in the form of essential oils, can also completely change your health.
Turn your house into your personal spa and wellness sanctuary by adding essential oils into your everyday routine.





Essential oils can be applied topically, ingested, or diffused in order to treat a variety of ailments.

Here are some of my favorite essential oils and their uses.

1. Lavender: Lavender is one of the most popular spa scents, due to its incredible ability to relax and soothe. Spray some on your pillow for a better night's rest. It can also be used to cure minor cuts and bruises and balance out stress hormones.

2. Chamomile: Ever had a cup of chamomile before bed? Chamomile is known for its soothing powers, but can also be used as an antiseptic and an antidepressant, among other things.

3. Lemon: We all know that artificial lemon is a common scent in cleaning products, but what you may not know is that lemon oil, mixed in water, is truly an incredible cleaning agent. You can spray down your whole kitchen, use it on your pet to rid it of fleas, and ingest it to increase alertness and detox your body. Bonus use: I apply lemon balm directly to cold sores to minimize healing time.

4. Juniper Berry: Juniper Berry is one of my favorite oils to diffuse, because it purifies the air, relieves stress, and clears up my irritated skin. Did I mention it smells amazing?

5. Oregano: Reduces airborne bacteria by 99%. Use oregano when you (or a roomie) have been feeling sick to purify the air. It has strong anti-bacterial, antiseptic and anti-viral properties.

6. Peppermint: Peppermint aids digestion. I like to sip peppermint tea throughout the day because it is delicious and also soothes my stomach, but for more intense healing, one drop in a glass of water can cure a sour tummy.

7. Tea Tree: Tea tree is a popular oil for its power to combat skin problems, like acne and fungal infections, and can be found in a range of skin, health care, and haircare products. I like to choose toothpastes that use tea tree oil.

I recommend dōTERRA oils, which not only smell amazing, but are also really wonderful quality. Each dōTERRA oil is therapeutic-grade and many are food-grade. Again, always be sure to check which are okay to ingest or apply topically.
I have been using the dōTERRA Petal diffuser and highly recommend it. This is an ultrasonic diffuser, which works by releasing a fine mist of water and essential oil into the air. This can also work as a humidifier, which is great for the winter months and for people who live in a dry climate.
