Break Out of Your Friendship Rut!

Friendships, like any relationship, can get stale or over-saturated. If you have been attached at the hip with your bestie for what feels like forever, it might be time for a new routine. Chances are, your friendship angst is just due to a mild case of boredom, so let’s shake things up a bit.

Here are a few ideas to fall in love with your BFF again!

Date your friends.

It is wonderful to be comfortable around each other, but sometimes what your friendship needs is for you to get out of your sweatpants and court each other. Get dolled up and go out on the town or treat yourselves to a dinner and movie date. Whatever you do, don’t go to the same old spot! Resist the temptation to fall back into the couch black hole!

Sorry, FRIENDS, this is a no-no.

Share a common goal.

Want to go from couch to 5k or sample the top 100 restaurants in your city? Team up with your friend! Sharing a goal is a great way to deepen your bond and make your friendship feel fresh.

Learn something new together.

The best way to break out of a rut: Try something new! Take a cooking class, join a knitting circle, or learn how how to scuba dive! Activities are a great way to reconnect and gain common interests (or disinterests) and expand your circle of friends. And, it takes off the pressure, if the idea of having a deep conversation is daunting.

Have a standing hangout.

Whether it’s deep dish pizza on Thursdays, daily 11 a.m. sweat sessions, or monthly book club, it is nice to have a standing meet-up scheduled to connect with your friend. Especially if you find yourselves drifting apart, this is an easy way to pencil in some face time.

Keep rediscovering your friend.

Ask your friend questions! Remind yourself what drew you to this friend to begin with. Whether it’s the hard-hitting "Do you like your peanut butter crunchy or smooth?" or the ever-popular deserted island query, starting a new rapport is a great way to strengthen your friendship. Don't assume you know everything about your friend, even if you have known each other for decades. Maybe your friend actually doesn't love Rom Coms or spearmint gum and you never bothered to find out!

p.s. Tory and I have been best friends for nearly a decade and are currently roomies!
